Lego Marvel Heroes

Lego Marvel Heroes

It’s 2013 and TTG has released one or more licensed Lego games for the last decade. What do you do when you’re a company that takes licenses and makes the exact same game year after year? You buy the biggest license and fill it with everything you possibly can. Does it work? Well Lego Marvel Heroes tries hard to find out. Spoiler: for the most part, it does.   If you’ve never played a Lego game before, most of them are linear games where you progress from level to level replaying famous scenes from movies. Star Wars and Harry Potter are excellent examples. Because Lego Marvel Heroes doesn’t use any one movie, comic, or cartoon it was free to be as original as it wanted. As the games are designed to allow children and adults to enjoy them, it’s not very difficult and the story is basic (although it embraces everything that it’s based upon, with lots of long time comic book easter eggs). Lego Marvel Heroes also benefits from an enormous open world. The story based levels are still linear but between those missions, you can enjoy an open world that gives you a lot to do.   The game is pretty, voice acting is fine, gameplay is fun and overall it’s an easily recommendable game. But no game is without flaws. It goes on a bit too long, the game is largely the same as the others and of all the unlockable characters most are reskins of the others. In fact there’s a lot of characters that have no use whatsoever. Mary Jane or Aunt May have...
Daredevil Season 2

Daredevil Season 2

When Netflix announced that they struck a deal with Marvel I was super excited. Then I heard that they were bringing street level heroes out and I was even more excited as it was the perfect place to show these heroes because they don’t carry the cinematic weight like Spider-Man or Thor. Their fans are passionate but a much smaller audience and that’s rarely worth a gamble. When it was mentioned that Daredevil came first, I was simultaneously disappointed and happy: first because he was my third least favourite Marvel character but front loading him meant I would get three characters I do love all back to back (which we now know isn’t what’s happening). Once the show finally happened, I discovered how wrong I was. It was an amazing show and I was happy to hear that they were going to do a second season and if it wasn’t for the fact that I was so wrong about season one I would have been concerned that the second season was going to feature my second least favourite Marvel character: Punisher.   Building on everything the first season worked to create, we have the Punisher right out the gate. At first an unseen force, but Netflix doesn’t insult the viewer by being coy about everything and drops a great brawl between DD and Frank by the end of the first episode. The show features roughly the same (probably a tiny bit more) easter eggs as the first season in regards to the greater Marvel universe and that’s fine since the show does it’s thing really well without needing the...
Marvel: Future Fight

Marvel: Future Fight

I don’t get to play many mobile games, and those that I do are highly replayable and more often than not are paid apps. Free to play games on mobile devices have me in a ‘alright, let’s see how greedy this game is’ mentality when I play them. That’s why when I come across excellent free to play games like Marvel’s Spider-Man Unlimited I find myself hooked. A few months back, Marvel released ‘Mighty Heroes’, a brawling game with synchronous co-op. It was ok, but it left a distinctive taste in my mouth that it lacked any real strategy. Unlimited had strategy, but lacked the rest of the Marvel universe. Mighty Heroes had the universe, but lacked strategy. Contest of Champions, a fighting game, was good but the story was really really bad. I think Future Fight might be a trinity for me: good gameplay, big universe and a story that isn’t horrible. But how greedy is it?   Like most Marvel games, it uses a fictional element called ISO-8, as well as Gems and Gold (why do heroes need gold? Who knows!) all as currency as well as some new concepts: DNA patterns and SHIELD currency. And of course, as with all mobile games these days, energy that dictates how long you can play the game for. Now with five plus different forms of currency in the game used to increase the effectiveness, level, power and gear of your characters, it seems like this should be a pretty prime target for greed. The thing is, much like my beloved Warframe, it seems (at least with three days of...
Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

I was born and raised on Comic Books at the worst possible time: the 90’s. Over masculine males posing with belts, pouches and weapons from every possible point you could attach them (even if it didn’t make sense), gritty storylines and grittier teeth and gimmicks galore. I probably have a dozen or so comics with ‘holographic’ or ‘foil’ covers with ‘collectors!’ emblazoned on every one. It had charm, but I’ve found it wasn’t for me. I prefer concise storytelling with themes that evoke emotions, or at least I do now. It’s why I still read comics and it is very much why I love Marvel (nothing against DC, but new 52 lacks any sort of heart). Moreover, Marvel has had a really great run of movies. I’m not saying they’re magicians that make everything they touch turn to gold, but at least it does look like there’s some Asgardian mischief going on to make all their movies top the box office. Everyone has their own ranking of which movie they feel is best and worst but no matter what your ranking is, you have to admit that Captain America at his best makes you want to just smile. He’s wholesome and kind and honest, something that is almost a rare commodity and even though he’s a fictitious character many people find him inspiring. The movie gets all of this across and more. Cap remains stalwart living in a time where the traits which define him are considered weaknesses. People do what they have to, often for the ‘greater good’. The movie itself is structured as a political thriller and...
